If you are going to convert to gas or another heating source but you first want to use up the heating oil in your oil storage tank, and provided that your oil fired heating equipment (oil fired boiler, furnace, or water heater) is good operating condition, you can choose to simply let the old, to-be-abandoned oil fired equipment keep running until you run out of oil almost. There are a few problems to watch out for: Fuel Supply Tank and Fuel Line. The fuel oil for an oil furnace is stored in a fuel supply tank. The tank is commonly connected directly to the fuel pump in the burner assembly of the furnace. The fuel supply tank and fuel line must be installed in accordance with the requirements of UL and any local codes and regulations.

If steel pipes are used, they should not be galvanised and must be painted and maintained to minimise corrosion. Plastic pipe systems are also available but must only be used below ground and outside of buildings. Fittings and jointing materials must be suitable for the type of pipe and fuel being used. Liquid fuel supply systems The tube sizes of heating coils chiefly affect the hydraulics of the heating system and are relatively unimportant from the standpoint of heat output of the panel. For sinuous floor coils 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch soft temper tube are generally used with a 9-inch or 12-inch center-to-center spacing. Water in Oil Storage Tanks A simple method that can be used on oil storage tanks whose fill pipe is located directly above the tank is to insert a dipstick into the oil tank after coating the dipstick end with a water-finding paste.
