9 Nov 2019 The first efforts to tap the oil sands resource began in the mid 20th century using hot water to separate bitumen from sand. Since then the process  Mining refers to the oil sands extraction process whereby large amounts of earth are removed, mixed with water and transported by pipeline to a plant, where the  Learn the oil sands process, from initial permit applications through to reclamation of the site. The process of turning oil sand into crude oil begins with mining the resource. The oil sand is erosive and tacky and the throughput of oil sand is large. A typical circuit or process line, involving process steps and equipment units, might process 8000 tonnes of oil sand per hour. A process for treating oil sands process water is provided, comprising removing free oil and grease from the oil sands process water to produce de-oiled process water; reducing the total suspended solids by subjecting the de-oiled process water to filtration using a membrane system to produce filtered process water; and removing dissolved ions such as chloride ions and sulfate ions present in Extraction of bitumen from oil sands widely employs a water-based extraction process—the ore is mixed with hot water and agitated, and 75% to 90% or more of the bitumen in the ore is floated off and recovered. Tailings from the process are composed of water, sand, silt, clay and residual bitumen. There are two different methods of producing oil from oil sands: open-pit mining and in situ. Bitumen that is close to the surface (less than 75 metres) is mined. Approximately 20% of oil sands are recoverable through open-pit mining. Bitumen is extremely thick and too heavy to flow or be pumped, Despite the increasing levels of production, the process of extraction and processing of oil sands can still be considered to be in its infancy. [citation needed] A second mine, operated by the Syncrude consortium, began operation in 1978 and is the biggest mine of any type in the world.

Currently, 20% of oil sands reserves are accessible via mining techniques. Large shovels scoop the oil sand into trucks which then move it to crushers where the large clumps of earth are processed. Once the oil sand is crushed, hot water is added so it can be pumped to the extraction plant. The Ore Preparation Plant (OPP) is the first step within any Bitumen Production facility where mined oil sands is loosely crushed and mixed with hot/warm water to form a slurry that can be pumped to the main processing plant. THE NEXT STEP. Oil sands is transported to the Slurry Preparation Plant (SPP or OPP-Wet) using conveyors. The number of conveyors correspond to the number of SPP trains. Hot or warm water is added to the oil sands in the SPP area, removing any oversized material and producing a pumpable slurry that can be gravity separated in Extraction. Conditioning starts the process of separating sand and bitumen and breaks apart any large pieces of oil sands. The oil sand is mixed with warm water-- called a slurry-- and transported by pipeline to an extraction facility. Here, the slurry is put through a separation process where sand sinks to the bottom and impure bitumen froth rises to the top. The froth is steamed, deaerated and diluted with naphtha to remove any lingering solids and promote flow. Mined oil sands normally contains from 7 to 13% bitumen by weight. The oil sands is trucked to the Ore Preparation Plant using large heavy haulers. A typical truck load is about 350 to 400 tonnes. Each truck dumps the oil sands load into hopper, feeding into a crusher or sizer. Oil sands mining operations run 24/7. As we mention in the description of the process, oil sands production requires an enormous amount of water (4 barrels of water for each barrel of oil). Further, the toxic tailings ponds — where the contaminated water leftover from pre-processing the bitumen is stored — pose disturbing health and environmental risks.

Petroleum products are produced from the oil sands through 3 basic steps: Extraction of the bitumen from the oil sands, where the solids and water are removed. Upgrading of the heavy bitumen to a lighter, intermediate crude oil product. Refining of the crude oil into final products such as gasoline, lubricants and diluents.
