Currently, 20% of oil sands reserves are accessible via mining techniques. Large shovels scoop the oil sand into trucks which then move it to crushers where the large clumps of earth are processed. Once the oil sand is crushed, hot water is added so it can be pumped to the extraction plant. The Ore Preparation Plant (OPP) is the first step within any Bitumen Production facility where mined oil sands is loosely crushed and mixed with hot/warm water to form a slurry that can be pumped to the main processing plant. THE NEXT STEP. Oil sands is transported to the Slurry Preparation Plant (SPP or OPP-Wet) using conveyors. The number of conveyors correspond to the number of SPP trains. Hot or warm water is added to the oil sands in the SPP area, removing any oversized material and producing a pumpable slurry that can be gravity separated in Extraction. Conditioning starts the process of separating sand and bitumen and breaks apart any large pieces of oil sands. The oil sand is mixed with warm water-- called a slurry-- and transported by pipeline to an extraction facility. Here, the slurry is put through a separation process where sand sinks to the bottom and impure bitumen froth rises to the top. The froth is steamed, deaerated and diluted with naphtha to remove any lingering solids and promote flow. Mined oil sands normally contains from 7 to 13% bitumen by weight. The oil sands is trucked to the Ore Preparation Plant using large heavy haulers. A typical truck load is about 350 to 400 tonnes. Each truck dumps the oil sands load into hopper, feeding into a crusher or sizer. Oil sands mining operations run 24/7. As we mention in the description of the process, oil sands production requires an enormous amount of water (4 barrels of water for each barrel of oil). Further, the toxic tailings ponds — where the contaminated water leftover from pre-processing the bitumen is stored — pose disturbing health and environmental risks.
