Both the NFL and AT&T missed their chance to opt out of their current NFL Sunday Ticket deal, The Athletic reports. AT&T and the National Football League are widely known to be at an impasse to extend their eight-year, $12 billion deal for Sunday Ticket, which was signed in 2014. In 2015, DIRECTV signed an eight-year agreement with the National Football League to carry the Sunday Ticket as an exclusive, meaning no other pay TV operator could offer it. The $12 billion deal covered seasons 2015 through 2022. (Note: DIRECTV has had the Sunday Ticket as an exclusive since its launch in 1994.) In its promotion that permits new customers to get the Ticket for free in 2019 if they sign a two-year agreement, DIRECTV now states: “NFL Sunday Ticket subscription will renew automatically in 2020 and each season thereafter, provided that DIRECTV carries these services, (italics ours) at the then prevailing rate unless you call to change or cancel by the date specified in your renewal notice.” The NFL and DirecTV have an agreement through the 2022 season, but the NFL has an opt-out after the 2019 season and appears to be considering using it to open up more games to a digital streaming partner.
